Al Baqi Cemetery
The oldest and first Islamic cemetery of Medina in Religious categoryAl-Baqi` is the primary cemetery for the residents of Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah and has served this role since the era of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Among the historical sites in Madinah, it is the closest to Al-Masjid An-Nabawi (the Prophet’s Mosque), situated directly opposite the southeastern wall of the mosque. Recently, adjacent land has been acquired to expand the burial area.
A striking new high marble wall now encircles the entire perimeter of Al-Baqi`, effectively unifying the old and new sections. The total area now encompasses 56,000 square meters (13.8 acres) and is the final resting place for countless Muslims.
Since the time of Hijrah, this cemetery has been the chosen resting place for residents of Madinah, surrounding regions, and visitors alike. It is particularly revered as the burial site for many noble Companions of the Prophet (may Allah be pleased with them all), with approximately ten thousand of them interred here. Among those buried at Al-Baqi` are the Mothers of the Believers (the wives of the Prophet), excluding Khadijah and Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with them all). Also interred are the Prophet’s daughters, his son Ibrahim, his uncle `Abbas, his aunt Safiyyah, and his grandson Al-Hasan ibn `Ali (may Allah be pleased with them all). Numerous other esteemed Muslims from throughout Islamic history are also buried here.
